Some Practice Sheets

Here are a few practice drawings I did from a book by Preston Blair (I believe 1947).

I love this little squirrel:

The rat is mine. The worn is fashioned after the nematodes on Spongebob Squarepants:

And Now Meet Gritta...

Earlier, I introduced Gritty, a character I draw for Grit Magazine. Now I would like you to meet Gritta, Gritty's sweetheart!

Gritta is a bit more fashion conscious than Gritty. This was for an article about rainwear:

Sometimes Gritty gets a little carried away...

But they both love a good campfire:

And they also like to dress up as other characters:

Thank you for looking! Enjoy!

A Few Birds

Here are a few random bird drawings.

This rooster was for a tattoo:

A Cedar Waxwing:

A Secretary Bird:

It's not a bird (it's a spark plug), but it has wings:

Meet Gritty

In this post I would like to introduce a character that I draw for Grit Magazine, Gritty! I have been drawing Gritty since 2007, when he first appeared in an article about backing trailers. He has evolved a lot since then. He started out as not much more than a stick character and became what you see below;

This drawing was for an article about Colonial livestock breeds. Gritty has found himself in a lot of situations. Here he is snorkeling:

And hunting:

Sometimes I draw Gritty as other characters. Here he is as "Griteye":

A seed scientist:

And Ol' Doc Gritty:

In the last eight years, I have drawn Gritty hundreds of times. I will be sharing more in future entries. Enjoy!

Cars, Planes and Other Machines

I've been drawing cars and stuff like that since I was 9. Here are some machines I have drawn over the last few years.

I like to draw animals driving fast:

These were both sold at Art Unleashed, an auction benefiting the Greater Kansas City Humane Society.

I love hot rods. Here are a few random:

The one above was originally for a flyer I did for a Halloween car show. Unfortunately, I don't have one of the fliers. Here is the car in color:

The King:

The following drawing was done when I worked in screen printing. I first drew it by hand then scanned it and re-drew it in Macromedia Freehand. It was used on shirts for Sonic Drive-In.

Here's another one I did in Freehand, just for fun:

Several years ago, a friend needed a cute airplane for a project she was working on. This is what I came up with. The first is the pencil original and the second is the final done in Freehand:

Another airplane:

And in color (Prismacolor). The website doesn't exist anymore:

This is a sensitive robot I made up:

And in color:

I'll leave you for now with this weird robot pig:

Bunny Mania!

As I mentioned earlier, bunnies are some of my favorite animals to draw. I have done quite a number of them over the years. Here are a few in no particular order. Unless otherwise noted, all drawings are pencil or pencil and pastel.

If I remember correctly, this one was sold at Art Unleashed, a benefit for the KC area Humane Society. I also like drawing cars. I will devote a post to them in the near future.

Sometimes I like to really abstract an object:

Here he is in color (Prismacolor):

This is an odd one I did around 2002:

The following two are rough versions of some commissioned works from 2006:

Here's another hammer-wielding psychobunny:

And here is the Bride's mate:

These guys are having a good time:

This is a refined version of the Party Bunny. The color is really subtle and my scanner doesn't pick it up very well:

This was a doodle I did at work a few years ago:

The next few are recent drawings based on the above doodle:

Here is one inspired by a drawing my nephew did when he was really young:

I have more bunnies and other characters that I will be posting soon. Enjoy!
