I've always loved the combination of cute and mischievous. This show was an early exploration of that. It also got me the attention of the police/bomb squad, the fire department and at least three TV stations.
The main piece in the show was a sculptural installation I called "I Love You To Pieces". It consisted of a large (Valentine's Day) teddy bear cut open with some of its stuffing removed. In the opening I placed a fake "device" and a bunch of staples and carpet tacks. I arranged it with a gift bag as though it had been dropped. Apparently, there's some law against displaying fake explosive devices and the police got involved. I didn't really get in trouble, but I couldn't display the sculpture in its entirety. I did however, get interviewed by three TV stations - KCTV5, KMBC9 and NBC41. Any publicity is good publicity. It was a great opening, too. I had a blast. ;)
I would love to post pics of the original sculpture, but these days somebody would be all over that and it probably wouldn't go so well for me.
The character I've used the most to illustrate the idea of cute/naughty is the Bad Bunny. I've drawn him a lot of different ways, but this one I've long considered "the original":
Here's another bunny. I remember the reporter from KCTV5 laughing out loud at this one:
This one was inspired by the song "Disgustipated" by Tool:
And speaking of cute carnivores, this next one was inspired by a true story. I'll spare the details. I call it "Siblings":
There were other works, but I am going to save them for future posts. I plan on doing a post of just bunnies, so stay tuned!
